In writing this book, Francesca Sanna asked many people to tell her about their experiences of leaving their homes and travelling through many lands, facing difficulties and dangers. From these accounts she created a collage of experiences for the child in the book.

When the book was published, Francesca travelled widely and asked many young people how they would finish the story of the journey, in the book.  Young people answered in words and pictures.
